Whitlow is an exceptionally spacious, five bedroom detached property, situated on Castle Nook Farm, Alston, within the North Pennine Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
With ample room to accommodate 11 guests, Whitlow provides a central touring base to enjoy the local Cumbrian and Northumberland landscape. Situated on a working hill farm, you can gain a real insight into the local landscape and the land management practices which take place to manage this unique and distinctive area.
A unique feature of a holiday at Whitlow is the opportunity to visit Whitley Castle, which is located on our farm. . We are working alongside English Heritage and Durham University to increase understanding and interpret the fort for visitors. Stewart Ainsworth (English Heritage investigator and Timeteam presenter) has called it “the best remaining fort in the Roman Empire” and the “hidden gem of the North Pennines”. Covering 8 hectares, it is a massive man-made feature in the landscape and recent intensive research by Durham University using geophysics has increased knowledge and understanding of its purpose and origins.
Also, the South Tynedale Railway (STR) runs through our farm from Alston to Kirkhaugh Station. There are footpaths installed on the farm to connect the South Tyne Trail, which runs alongside the railway, to the Pennine Way.
You will find many breeds of wildlife living around the farm; red and black grouse, curlew, lapwing, heron, Golden Plover, Barn Owls, Oystercatcher and just some of the ones we see every day! We are 40 minutes from Ullswater and the North Lake District, an hour from Newcastle and 30 minutes from both Carlisle and Hexham. The local town of Alston (2 ˝ miles away) provides local amenities and, as the highest market town in England, it retains many historic architectural features of interest. It has, in the past, featured in television adaptations such as Oliver Twist and Catherine Cookson films.
